PC Essentials
PC Essentials - the renowned basic computer literacy training program that not only provides students with basic computer knowledge, but also equips each student with a fully functional take-home computer that is preloaded with XP Professional operating software and Microsoft Office 2003 software with Juno Internet access (where available).. An expanded version of this program, PC Essentials for Business, provides critical technology training, software and equipment for the beginning entrepreneur or small business. Supplemental courses and a flexible training outline allow PC Essentials to be customized for groups, organizations and various grant requirements. This program also provides the means for MTTC’s many civic contributions to non-profit organizations, communities, and needy individuals.
MTTC has established a positive reputation for its efforts to “bridge the digital divide” through the PC Essentials program. More than 13,500 donated computers have been saved from ending up in land fills or just collecting dust in attics or basements and have been refurbished and given lease-on-life in households, schools, and organizations throughout the region.
Beneficiaries have included:
- More than 3,000 KTAP (welfare-to-work) clients
- 3,000 Kentucky and Southern Ohio farmers
- Over 600 senior citizens completed basic computer literacy skills training
- More than 200 displaced Kentucky workers received computers and training
- 100 at-risk teenagers and their parents received training and took home a computer
- Over 100 STARS (family literacy) clients were able to place computers in the home
MTTC establishes many partnerships to sponsor PC Essentials training directly or assist in seeking funds to offer PC Essentials at various locations. For many years, MTTC has maintained a formal partnership with the Kentucky Community and Technical College System (KCTCS). Together both organizations have enjoyed success participating in numerous grant projects. The local community colleges provide the ideal venues for MTTC Training. MTTC students of the PC Essentials program have benefited from many sources of grants and funding programs. Some of the more significant sources of funding include:
- Kentucky Workforce Alliance
- Kentucky Department of Adult Education
- Governor’s Office of Technology
- Governor’s Office of Agricultural Policy
- Kentucky Office of the Attorney General
